Computational screen identifies six chiral carbon-boron semimetal candidates

First-principles calculations screened 972 possible C-B structures in selected chiral space groups and identified six stable candidates. For one structure, the study estimates a 31.1 K superconducting transition using the McMillan formula; it does not report synthesis of the materials.

The source does not state the event date; the period shown is the source review period.

The team generated CₘBₙ structures in selected hexagonal chiral space groups using Wyckoff positions. Candidates with up to 40 atoms per cell passed filters for energy, dynamical stability, metallicity, band topology and thermal stability. Six structures remained from the initial 972 in this computational workflow.

For (C₃B₂)₈, calculations indicated charge-three Weyl points, strong electron-phonon coupling and a McMillan transition-temperature estimate of 31.1 K for a Coulomb pseudopotential μ*=0.10. The estimate comes from phonon and electronic-structure calculations; no experimental critical temperature or synthesis was reported. The work offers theoretical candidates for future synthesis and characterization.

Calculations predict phonon frequency combs in two twisted atomic bilayers

Researchers at the Dubai campus of the Birla Institute of Technology and Science used density-functional theory to study two twisted transition-metal dichalcogenide heterostructures. Their model predicts that both structures can form frequency combs between selected vibrational modes.

WS₂ layers show nonlinear phase changes in electron ptychography

Researchers compared monolayer, bilayer and trilayer regions of WS₂ in one specimen using electron ptychography. The measured phase of tungsten columns rose about 13.2% from one to two layers, but only 4.7% from two to three.

New epitaxy method stabilised four metastable crystalline phases

A research team led by MIT used a method it calls diffusion-activated epitaxy to experimentally stabilise four distinct crystalline phases. The preprint says diffraction and microscopy data for three phases did not match structures in the crystal databases examined.
