The U.S. Treasury said its payment-verification process screened more than 1.1 billion federal payments worth about $3.7 trillion during fiscal 2026. Treasury reported that the checks identified and returned roughly 13,500 payments totaling $175 million that otherwise would have gone to deceased individuals.

The department also said access to its Do Not Pay data expanded to about 99% of federal programs, from about 4% at the end of fiscal 2025, and that it screened more than 2.3 billion records. Treasury says the new bank-account and taxpayer-ID checks became fully operational on September 30; the figures are agency-reported results, not an independent audit.
