SLB reported on October 15 that its at-bit Retina imaging system had been used in more than 50 wells across 18 locations worldwide during its first year of commercial deployment. The company says the system produces geological images at about 2-millimeter resolution and captures information before drilling alters the rock.

In examples cited by the company, the system imaged more than 5,300 feet of horizontal section in a North American well and recorded more than 1,275 feet of data during 70 hours of drilling in a Latin American well. These are company-reported deployments. SLB says the images can provide earlier information for well planning and drilling decisions; the release gives no overall success rate or independently verified cost savings.
