The scenario involved a fuel spill and fire while an aircraft was boarding and refuelling. It carried 39 simulated occupants: 35 passengers and four crew. Three simulated fatalities, 20 injuries and 16 people escaping unharmed were part of the exercise, not a real crash.

Aena said the exercise tested the airport’s self-protection plan and activation of Andalusia’s regional civil-protection emergency plan. Airport firefighters, medical teams, police, rescue services and teams supporting victims’ families participated.
