Scotland industrial biotechnology plan targets £2bn turnover by 2030
Scottish Enterprise said on 8 October that a refreshed National Plan for Industrial Biotechnology aims to grow Scotland’s sector turnover to £2 billion by 2030. The plan also targets 220 active companies and more than 5,500 jobs.

Prepared by IBioIC on behalf of Scottish Enterprise, the plan focuses on commercialising innovation, scaling production, domestic supply chains and skills. Industrial biotechnology uses renewable biological resources and waste materials to produce chemicals, materials and energy.
The agency said sector turnover exceeded £1.6 billion in 2023 and the number of active companies had risen from 43 to more than 175 since the first plan was published in 2013. Those historical figures refer to different periods from the plan’s 2030 targets.
