Reserve Bank of Australia Deputy Governor Andrew Hauser said money markets remained orderly as the central bank’s balance sheet ran down, with no short-term rate friction so far. Speaking at a Sydney investment conference on 21 October, he said demand in the bank’s open market operations was low and private repo rates were below the rates offered through those operations.
Hauser estimated that reserves stood at about A$200 billion while the market estimated system needs at A$70–100 billion, and said the RBA was not yet near its ample-reserves point. He contrasted Australia with other countries that had experienced short-rate spikes as central bank balance sheets shrank. He also said the RBA had announced additions to its toolkit, including a term repo facility it hoped to introduce in 2027.
