Pacific Northwest National Laboratory is contributing to five new projects funded through the Department of Energy’s Genesis Mission, according to a PNNL overview published October 9. The teams are developing superintelligence tools for energy systems, subsurface science and particle-physics research; PNNL researchers are collaborators, while other national laboratories and universities lead several teams.
The work includes faster weather scenarios for grid planning, pore-scale models relevant to geothermal heat and critical-mineral recovery, coding agents for maintaining scientific software, and plain-language interfaces for accelerator controls. A University of California, Irvine-led geothermal project will combine data from monitored sites with simulations and literature; its stated goal is to reduce development time and financial risk by up to 35%, a target rather than a demonstrated outcome.
