The Environmental Policing Battalion of Piauí’s Military Police recorded 496 incidents involving wild animals in Teresina and its metropolitan area between July and September 2026. The state government’s October 17 release gives monthly counts of 193 in July, 177 in August and 126 in September.

The release says fires can damage animal habitat and contribute to wildlife appearing in residential areas, but it does not quantify that link in the incident totals. Residents were advised to keep distance, move children and pets away and call 190 rather than touch, feed, capture or chase an animal.
