The Director-General of Nigeria’s National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), Omotenioye Majekodunmi, called for an actionable, time-bound roadmap at a carbon-market roundtable in Abuja on 6 October, Voice of Nigeria reported. The meeting focused on measurement, reporting and verification (MRV) systems intended to support credible carbon credits and investment while guarding against double-counting and greenwashing.

The council described a unified national carbon registry as a planned component. It would record credits generated, issued, transferred and retired in Nigeria. NCCC also plans to accelerate digital MRV methods, including remote sensing, internet-connected sensors, geospatial data and distributed-ledger technology.

Nigeria adopted a National Carbon Markets Framework in 2025, according to an EU delegation official quoted in the report. The latest roundtable discussed a preliminary roadmap for putting that framework into operation; VON did not report a launch date or that the registry was live.
