Norway's Institute of Bioeconomy Research, NIBIO, conducted its first garlic-growing trial at Apelsvoll. The team tested five varieties from Spain and the Netherlands—one hardneck and four softneck—and reported good harvests from several softneck types, while some appeared stressed by Norway's climate.

NIBIO says Norway imports about 1,500 tonnes of garlic each year, mainly from China, Spain and Argentina. Four producers around Stange have attempted commercial production since 2024. The institute plans to add Lithuanian varieties and assess whether bulbils formed by hardneck garlic can speed seed-garlic production; the release does not establish commercial-scale yields.

Methodology

Values retain the source basis. Annual feed figures are 2025 sector estimates; the October seed count uses the deposit period. Other dates identify report publication, not experiment day. Laboratory oil-holding capacity is not nutritional fat content; counts do not establish production or scale-up success.
