Agriculture Minister Arvin Boolell stressed the need to bring scientific and modern pest-management methods to farmers facing fruit-fly threats. The five-day regional course is being held in Mauritius from 19 to 23 October and examines integrating the Sterile Insect Technique with area-wide pest management.

The government says the course brings together 26 participants under the African Regional Cooperative Agreement for Research, Development and Training related to Nuclear Science and Technology. Its aims include reducing pesticide reliance and improving yields and agricultural export opportunities. The release reports no measured yield gain or specific pest-control outcome.
