USDA’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) announced on October 13 a deregulation decision for Ball Horticultural Company’s African marigold engineered to produce red petals. The agency concluded that the modified variety was unlikely to pose greater plant-pest risk than its unmodified comparator.

The decision draws on the company’s petition data, available scientific evidence and public comments on the draft risk assessment published in February. APHIS says the variety is no longer subject to its rule governing introduction of certain engineered organisms. The assessment addresses plant-pest risk; the announcement does not report a food-safety approval.
