Dwellings authorised in Italian building permits rise 8% year on year
Istat estimates that dwelling units in newly approved residential buildings increased from the same quarter of 2025.

Italy’s national statistics institute Istat published building-permit estimates for the second quarter of 2026 on October 9. The number of dwellings in newly authorised residential buildings was up 8.0% from the same quarter a year earlier; this is a count of dwelling units covered by permits, not the number of permit documents.
In the seasonally adjusted quarterly comparison, authorised dwellings increased 3.8%. Usable residential floor area rose 7.3% year on year and 1.4% quarter on quarter; non-residential building area was also up 2.0% quarter on quarter and 5.1% year on year. Istat said the second-quarter residential gains did not fully recover the first-quarter decline. Permits are approvals, not completed homes.
