The World Health Organization said the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) issued a food insecurity and malnutrition alert for Sudan on 12 October. The IPC warned that famine risk was growing in parts of Greater Darfur and Greater Kordofan, where conflict, mass displacement, severe drought and inadequate humanitarian funding were worsening conditions. Drought associated with El Niño was affecting roughly half the country, reducing food availability and livelihoods while pushing prices higher.
WHO said it had supported treatment for more than 26,000 children with severe acute malnutrition and medical complications between January and August 2026, and had provided support to all 161 operational nutrition stabilization centres in the country. It also reported that 37% of health facilities had stopped functioning by 2026 and that only 23% of its US$97.7 million humanitarian appeal was funded. The alert is a warning about rising risk and deteriorating conditions, not a new famine classification.
