Afghanistan faces projected rise in child acute malnutrition in 2027
UNICEF and Action Against Hunger say more than four million children in Afghanistan may need treatment for acute malnutrition in 2027, the highest projected count in five years. The IPC analysis projects that provinces with critical malnutrition levels will rise from 10 in 2026 to 14 in 2027.

The projection includes 1.09 million children with severe acute malnutrition, 16% more than in 2026, and nearly three million with moderate acute malnutrition. Nearly 1.3 million pregnant or breastfeeding women are also projected to face malnutrition. The agencies cite seasonal pressures and an anticipated funding shortfall as risks to prevention and treatment access.
