Brazil’s Environment Ministry said in a statement issued on 9 October that Ibama had extinguished 229 fires in Amazonas since the start of the fire season and was still fighting 20 active fires. The ministry said six additional aircraft, including four water-dropping planes and two helicopters, plus 290 firefighters would be deployed to support the response.
The statement said Amazonas requested federal support on 23 September but told the federal Respad team on 30 September, after rain helped control fire hotspots, that its field deployment was no longer needed. The ministry also said it had advised the state to seek additional resources through the national civil-defence system, but that no formal request had yet been filed. These are agency-reported figures, not an independently verified fire census.
