On 14 October, Canada announced funding with the Northwest Territories government and the Northwest Territories Power Corporation for a new Fort Simpson energy facility. The federal contribution is C$31,312,500 and the utility’s contribution is C$10,437,500. The project is planned to replace the existing diesel plant, which is exposed to erosion along the Mackenzie River.

The plan calls for two 1.6 MW LNG generation units and two backup diesel generators; the plant is forecast to run on 90% LNG. The release presents lower emissions and energy security as project aims; the facility has not yet been built. Cost and operating outcomes remain plans rather than measured performance.
