Euro area government debt reaches 88.9% of GDP

Eurostat reported an EU ratio of 82.9% at the end of the first quarter.

Euro area general government gross debt reached 88.9% of GDP at the end of the first quarter of 2026, Eurostat reported on 21 July. The ratio was 87.7% at the end of the previous quarter.

The EU ratio increased from 81.8% to 82.9%. The figures cover the 21-member euro area and remain provisional. Debt is an end-period stock, rather than the budget deficit generated during a quarter.
