The European Commission published an assessment on 18 September of the environmentally sound management of plastic waste exported from the EU to Türkiye. It noted that Türkiye had strengthened its legislation and taken enforcement steps, including more controls and higher fines.

The report says more information and progress are needed on transparency around plastic waste generation and treatment, the effect of imported waste on domestic waste management, and implementation of rules to prevent environmental harm. EU plastic waste exports to Türkiye reached 510,000 tonnes in 2025, out of 1.4 million tonnes exported by the EU that year.
