Ethiopia records 33 trillion birr in digital financial transactions

Gemechis Dugasa, director of regulation, licensing and approval at the National Bank of Ethiopia, said the country recorded digital financial transactions worth 33 trillion birr in fiscal year 2025/26. Speaking at the Ethiopia Finance Forum on 1 October, he said mobile banking, digital payments, mobile money and agent-based services were changing how financial services reach customers.

Dugasa said that digitalization also requires cybersecurity, data protection, reliable infrastructure and stronger operational governance. The 33 trillion birr figure is transaction value; ENA's report did not provide a transaction count or calculation method.
