The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced a $272 million WIFIA loan for Columbia, Tennessee, on October 2. The city plans to use the financing for its Long Term Water Supply Program. The project includes a new raw-water intake structure, a transmission main and improvements to the existing drinking-water treatment plant.

EPA said the upgrades are intended to improve supply reliability for the city and rural communities in its service area. The announcement did not quantify the capacity increase or give a construction completion date. WIFIA is long-term federal credit assistance; the announced $272 million does not mean a new facility is complete or that additional water is already being delivered.
