The U.S. Department of Energy announced a conditional loan commitment of up to $4.2 billion for upgrades to Vistra’s nuclear fleet in Pennsylvania and Ohio. The planned work at Beaver Valley, Davis-Besse and Perry would increase output from existing reactors rather than build a new transmission corridor.
DOE said the projects are expected to add 433 megawatts of nuclear capacity and preserve nearly 4 gigawatts of existing power. The department estimates about 3,000 project-related jobs; the plants could operate 20 years beyond their current licenses. The commitment is conditional, and Vistra must meet technical, legal, environmental and financial requirements before loan funds are issued.
