Delaware team maps Kernza roots with geophysical imaging

Researchers used 72 electrodes and 3,000 measurements to map soil beneath Kernza, corn and alfalfa plots. The Delaware study is ongoing; Minnesota findings come from separate work.

Researchers from the University of Delaware, USDA Agricultural Research Service and MIT used geophysical imaging to compare roots of Kernza, a perennial grain, with corn and alfalfa. They sent electrical current among 72 metal stakes placed in the field and collected 3,000 measurements; soil cores will help validate the images.

The team says the Delaware Kernza plot is two years old and the measurements provide initial impressions; more data collection is planned for next summer. Minnesota studies cited by the source found Kernza could reduce nitrate losses compared with annual crops, but those results were not measured in the Delaware plot. Kernza is currently grown for research, not commercial production, in the Mid-Atlantic.

Values retain the source basis. Annual feed figures are 2025 sector estimates; the October seed count uses the deposit period. Other dates identify report publication, not experiment day. Laboratory oil-holding capacity is not nutritional fat content; counts do not establish production or scale-up success.
