IllustrationA CDC surveillance report published on 1 October says the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) recorded 70,133 fatal incidents involving 72,093 deaths in the 50 states and the District of Columbia for 2023. Puerto Rico was reported separately, with 671 fatal incidents involving 730 deaths.
Of deaths in the 50 states and DC total, 62.4% were classified as suicides and 28.5% as homicides. NVDRS records accounted for 91.6% of U.S. deaths in the specified categories: homicide, legal intervention, suicide, unintentional firearm injury, and deaths of undetermined intent that might be due to violence.
The system links death certificates with coroner or medical examiner records and law-enforcement reports. Forty-seven states supplied statewide data, while California, Florida and Texas contributed only specified counties; Puerto Rico was analyzed separately. The report offers detailed surveillance, not a complete census of all U.S. deaths.
