Canada’s industry and AI minister Evan Solomon announced data-centre development principles with the municipal federation on 3 September. The government described data centres as critical infrastructure for health, finance, research and public systems.
The framework sets five expectations: lasting local benefits, no transfer of electricity costs to households, reduced water and environmental impacts, transparency about local effects, and strategic value for Canada. These are announced principles, not an approval decision for a specific centre.
