A study published on October 13 by Brazil’s Energy Research Office (EPE) with the Ministry of Cities says public lighting used about 13,300 GWh in 2024, around 2.4% of national electricity consumption. The service reaches approximately 94% of localities and can account for 3% to 5% of municipal budgets.
EPE says replacing obsolete equipment with LEDs and improving remote management could raise efficiency and service quality. The study calls for a regularly updated national database, a reproducible estimate of efficiency potential, and open standards and data security as lighting networks take on digital functions.
