Brazil’s National Mining Agency (ANM) received the first Mining Governance Excellence Award from the Intergovernmental Forum on Mining, Minerals, Metals and Sustainable Development (IGF) for its model for managing mining-dam safety. The award was announced on 14 October at the forum’s 22nd annual general meeting in Geneva.
ANM said the number of dams built or raised by the upstream method declined from 61 to 39 between 2022 and 2026, and that it conducted more than 1,000 inspections. The agency also cited updated rules, alert systems, public monitoring dashboards and development of its SIGBM 2.0 information system. These are agency-reported regulatory and inspection outputs, not an independent safety assessment.
Data
ANM mining-dam safety results, 2022–2026
Two measures ANM reported for the period from 2022 to 2026 in its award announcement.
| Upstream-built or raised mining dams, 2022 | 61 | false |
| Upstream-built or raised mining dams, 2026 | 39 | false |
| Mining-dam inspections conducted, 2022–2026 | 1000 | true |
Methodology
Figures are reproduced from ANM’s 15 October 2026 announcement. The agency says the number of dams built or raised by the upstream method fell from 61 to 39 and that it carried out more than 1,000 inspections; these figures are not a safety rate for all dams.
