EPE says biomethane certificates must distinguish origin from carbon savings
The energy research company says Brazil’s CGOB tracks renewable origin and volume, while CBIOs represent reductions in fuel carbon intensity.

Brazil’s Energy Research Office (EPE) published an analysis on October 9 comparing the role of the biomethane origin certificate, CGOB, with the CBIO carbon-credit instrument. It says a CGOB certifies biomethane’s renewable origin and the volume produced and marketed, while a CBIO is tied to a fuel’s lifecycle carbon-intensity reduction.
The study discussed by EPE puts Brazil’s economic biomethane supply potential above 84 million cubic metres per day; this is an estimate, not current output. It warns that certificates could lead to double claims over the same environmental attribute, and says tax and regulatory treatment can affect the instruments’ economic value. EPE also notes that some study assumptions predate more recent regulatory decisions.
