Brazil’s National Center for Monitoring and Early Warning of Natural Disasters (CEMADEN) reported in a September 2026 bulletin published October 2 that the number of municipalities in severe or extreme drought classes rose from 157 in August to 276 in September. The center put the combined increase at 75.8%.

The count in the extreme class rose from 4 to 54, while the severe class increased from 153 to 222. CEMADEN said the worsening was concentrated in the Northeast, particularly Alagoas, Sergipe and northern Bahia. Its index combines precipitation, soil-moisture and vegetation-health indicators; the classification is not a direct measurement of crop losses.
