AXIA Energia said on October 23 that it had transferred operating control of the Teles Pires and Colíder hydropower plants from Brasília to its operations center in Tucuruí, Pará. The move brings seven Amazon-region plants under one control center. AXIA gives the group’s combined installed capacity as 11.2 gigawatts. That is nameplate capacity, not the plants’ real-time output or a guarantee that all capacity is always available.
The seven facilities are Tucuruí, Teles Pires, Colíder, Balbina, Samuel, Coaracy Nunes and Curuá-Una. AXIA says centralizing operations is intended to standardize procedures and speed responses to contingencies. Those are the operator’s stated goals; its announcement provides no before-and-after evidence showing a measurable reduction in outages or generation costs from the control-center change.
Remote commands from Tucuruí include starting and stopping generating units, adjusting their output and monitoring reservoir hydrology. At Teles Pires, operators can also act on the spillway, which releases water without sending it through turbines. These controls connect electricity production decisions with water management, making remote supervision more than a simple transfer of communications equipment.
AXIA says the center works to a daily schedule set by Brazil’s National System Operator (ONS), based on plant availability. ONS may request adjustments through the day as system conditions change. Tucuruí staff carry out those adjustments and report incidents that could affect planned generation. The arrangement shows that remote control is one operational layer within system dispatch, not a replacement for national coordination.
The center has 17 professionals working three shifts around the clock, according to AXIA. Alongside energy schedules, they track reservoir conditions and environmental restrictions specific to each plant. The company cites downstream river conditions and fish protection at Tucuruí, and restrictions concerning turtles at Balbina. These constraints underscore why dispatch decisions cannot be applied identically across every facility in the group.
AXIA says hydropower can help balance variable wind and solar generation, while actual adjustments remain subject to unit availability, hydrology and environmental limits. The company presents consolidation as a way to improve response speed and consistency, but it has not published measured operating outcomes from the change. This account therefore records the completed transfer and the announced procedures without treating expected efficiency or reliability gains as proven results.
