Qatar’s Ministry of Culture Visual Arts Center held a lecture on gypsum ornamentation and its place in traditional architecture. Cultural heritage expert Mohammed Saeed Al Bloushi described the carved and cast work as part of a building’s original design, tied to room dimensions, ceiling heights and the movement of light and shadow.
Al Bloushi discussed geometric patterns built through repetition, rotation, symmetry and interlacing, noting that simple rules can form complex visual systems with parallels to computational design. He also framed architectural identity as an interaction among local materials, climate, craftsmanship, social memory and place, and said gypsum’s sensitivity to environmental conditions complicates preservation. The session called for heritage principles to inspire contemporary expression as well as documentation.
