A modelling analysis estimated the potential effect of raising preventive-care use in 20 middle-income countries to levels found in high-performing U.S. health systems. In a release published October 11, the American Heart Association said the model estimated that blood-pressure control could avert 518,476 cardiovascular deaths annually under an approximately 80% coverage scenario.
The same scenario estimated 340,682 annual cardiovascular deaths averted through indicated statin treatment and 309,520 through glucose control for people with diabetes; colon-cancer screening was associated with a separate estimate of 206,767 cancer deaths averted each year. These are model outputs, not observed outcomes. The Association said the meeting abstract had not undergone peer review and that its findings remain preliminary until a full paper is published.

Model estimates under a preventive-care coverage scenario
Estimated annual deaths that could be averted under an approximately 80% service-coverage assumption.

Methodology
Figures reproduce estimates in the American Heart Association's October 11, 2026 release. They compare current service use with a modeled target of approximately 80% coverage; they are not observed outcomes. The Association says the conference abstract was not peer-reviewed.
