The UK Cabinet Office released an autumn progress update on 31 October 2026 confirming that 24,621 civil service posts have now moved outside Greater London under the Places for Growth initiative.

The programme had set a target of relocating 22,000 civil service roles across Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and the English regions by 2030, a threshold achieved well ahead of schedule.

Major hubs receiving relocated departments include Glasgow, Cardiff, Leeds, Manchester and Darlington, decentralising government decision-making and boosting local regional economies.
