Preliminary Agriculture Ministry figures estimate Syria’s peanut crop this season at 17,970 tonnes, grown on about 6,256 hectares. A ministry official said the cultivated area was nearly unchanged from the previous season.

Peanuts are used in confectionery, peanut butter and oil, but the official said limited specialized processing capacity constrains demand and new uses. Growers also face irrigation-water shortages, high fertilizer and pesticide costs, and marketing difficulties.
