Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Environment, Water and Agriculture launched the first phase of the Sustainable Agricultural Parks Initiative on 19 October and witnessed the signing of seven investment contracts for agricultural parks. The ministry said the initiative will use national-park lands with sparse or degraded vegetation near treated-water sources to grow local fruit-bearing plants with economic value.

The National Center for Vegetation Cover Development and Combating Desertification said the contracts can run for up to 15 years and are expected to generate a cumulative SAR 6 billion contribution to GDP over 15 years and more than 700 direct jobs. The projects cover the Madinah, Tabuk and Makkah regions. The initiative aims to increase treated-water reuse and provide a sustainable water source for agriculture and vegetation.
