A session at the fifth annual international conference of the King Salman Global Academy for Arabic Language discussed research on how Arab culture is represented in large language models. The Saudi Press Agency reported on October 5 that the study compared global and Arabic models’ understanding of proverbs, idioms and cultural concepts.
The study found larger differences between models in interpreting proverbs and idiomatic expressions, while performance on direct cultural vocabulary was more comparable. Other papers at the session examined Arabic calligraphy in generative AI and ChatGPT’s interpretation of indirect Najdi Arabic utterances. The studies recommended expanding language corpora to include Saudi and other Arabic dialects, developing specialized benchmarks and fine-tuning models on dialect data.
