Penn State researchers reported that water-based droplets linked by lipid membranes and ion channels can form soft networks that process time-varying signals. Laboratory measurements and a physics-based model showed that connected droplets influence one another and retain short-lived electrical traces.

In model-based benchmarks, connected networks reduced prediction error by nearly 50% compared with independent nodes. That result comes from simulation comparisons; the system is not yet an integrated, self-contained computer or biomedical product.

SlackSwap combines data transfers and recomputation in GPU-limited training

Researchers at UC Merced and the University of Texas at Austin introduced SlackSwap, a planner for deep-learning training. It recomputes some activations when the transfer budget between a GPU and host memory is exceeded; reported results come from simulation, not hardware measurements.
