Norway’s fisheries ministry said on 18 October that Nigeria is ready to join the Norway-led Blue Justice initiative and use Norwegian satellite data. Nigeria signed the Copenhagen Declaration, the initiative’s political basis, in 2022. The ministry said a Nigerian minister and Norway’s ambassador discussed cooperation during the week of the announcement.

Norwegian and Kenyan officials met in Oslo the previous week to discuss Kenya joining the declaration; the release does not say Kenya signed or joined the initiative. Blue Justice shares satellite data, analysis and digital tools, and partners can use expertise at its vessel-tracking centre in Vardø. Norway said 61 countries had signed the declaration and 19 African countries took part in the cooperation.
