Stakeholders discussing the Oshin-Oyi catchment in Nigeria considered land and climate-management issues across an area of approximately 4.9 million hectares. A Kogi ACReSAL project report dated October 18 said the discussion took place on the third day of an engagement focused on implementing catchment management plans. The watershed spans parts of Kwara, Kogi and Niger states.

The report says assessments found about 48% of the catchment at high risk of soil loss, while seasonal floods affect settlements including Mokwa, Edu, Pategi, Lavun and Borgu along the Niger River floodplain. Participants identified erosion control, afforestation, flood management, river desilting, climate-smart agriculture, improved clean-water access and mediation among resource users as priority interventions. The report does not give a financing commitment, implementation timetable or measured improvement already achieved.

Methodology

Values are reported approximately in the source and describe an assessment, not measured improvements or completed conservation outputs. Area scales the source’s 4.9 million hectares by 1,000,000; risk share is approximate and the 2050 population is a projection above 15 million. Null cells are inapplicable fields, not zeros.
