New Zealand announced on 16 October that KiwiRail would fund up to NZ$37.5 million from its own resources for Picton rail yard upgrades and automatic mooring equipment at the new wharf.

The works are additional commercial assets in the New Ferries project. The ministry says they can run alongside planned construction without delay; the amount is a funding ceiling, not completed expenditure.
