Istat adds province-level detail to Italy’s 2025 road-crash data
Italy’s statistics office added provincial breakdowns to its 2025 road-crash release on 15 October. Compared with 2019, road deaths rose in 41 of 107 provinces, fell in 57 and were unchanged in nine; seven provinces had already reached the EU goal of halving fatalities.

Istat’s 15 October update adds province-level detail and a more developed road-category classification to national 2025 figures first published on 24 July. The underlying annual totals were 177,207 crashes involving injuries, 2,868 deaths and 237,822 injured people. Istat said fatalities were 5.3% lower than in 2024 and 9.6% lower than in 2019, while the number of injury crashes rose 2.2% year on year.
The provincial comparison uses 2019 as the reference for the 2030 target of reducing deaths and serious injuries by 50%. Istat identified seven provinces—Prato, Fermo, Crotone, Vercelli, Vibo Valentia, Isernia and Siena—that had achieved the halving target for deaths by 2025. The office also said the mortality index exceeded twice the national average in 12 provinces, led by Nuoro, Sud Sardegna and Benevento. This is a geographic detail update, not a new count of national road deaths separate from the July release.
