India’s Jal Shakti ministry has launched the Punah Bharan mobile application to support groundwater recharge planning, according to an official announcement published on 28 October. BISAG-N developed the platform with the National Water Mission and the ministry’s water resources department.
The application can identify potential artificial recharge zones within a radius of up to three kilometres and show recharge structures suited to local conditions. A linked web portal provides village-level zonation maps, geographical information system tools and thematic layers.
The platform combines information on rainfall, groundwater levels and yield, slope and drainage. Its purpose is to guide identification and planning. A mapped potential recharge area is not a completed water project, an assurance of groundwater recovery or evidence that a particular site is suitable without further assessment.
