Across the full third quarter, goods consumption increased 0.4%, following a 0.2% increase in the second quarter. Quarterly energy spending rose 1.2%, manufactured-goods consumption increased 0.3% and food consumption was stable. A monthly fall at the end of a quarter can coexist with growth in the quarter’s average relative to the preceding quarter.

The series measures goods rather than all household consumption, so services are outside its scope. Volumes use chain-linked previous-year prices and are adjusted for seasonal and working-day effects. These changes therefore describe real consumption volumes, rather than a comparison of nominal cash spending or retail sales revenue.
