The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced on October 2 a package of more than $90 million to support 83 new projects in the Chesapeake Bay watershed. EPA is providing $37 million, while the announcement lists a further $53 million from other agencies. The grants are intended to support watershed restoration, water-quality improvements, habitat work and locally led projects.
EPA says more than 1,800 local communities and nearly 18 million people depend on the watershed. The awards are being made through two grant programs administered under the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation’s Chesapeake Bay Stewardship Fund. The announcement reports funding and planned project counts; it does not yet measure completed water-quality or habitat outcomes, so the package should not be read as evidence that those results have already occurred.
