ECDC’s week 40 report identified 202 areas affected by West Nile virus in 16 European countries through 30 September during the 2026 transmission season. It recorded 1,765 locally acquired human cases by that cutoff.

Italy reported the largest country total, 721 cases, followed by Greece with 420. ECDC said 16 areas were reported as affected for the first time this season during the week. Country counts and area counts are different units: reporting countries and areas with at least one locally acquired human case.

The ECDC overview uses human infections reported to EpiPulse during the current season and excludes animal surveillance. It is intended to support authorities’ decisions on deferral or testing of donors of substances of human origin, including blood components.
