The U.S. Department of Energy announced an annual “Open Call” offering up to $400 million for basic research in fiscal 2027. The funding opportunity is intended for proposals in areas not covered by the department’s more specific calls.

DOE listed seven program areas: advanced scientific computing, basic energy sciences, biological and environmental research, fusion energy, high-energy physics, nuclear physics, and isotope research and production. The announcement sets a maximum funding opportunity; it does not state that the full amount has been awarded or identify selected projects.
