Canada manufacturing advance indicator points to 0.1% September sales gain
Statistics Canada’s early estimate cites increases in petroleum and coal products and aerospace; the official September figure is scheduled for Nov. 13.

Statistics Canada’s advance indicator, released on October 23, showed Canadian manufacturing sales edging up 0.1% month over month in September 2026. The agency describes this as an early estimate prepared while collection is still under way, not the final monthly result. The calculation measures the change in seasonally adjusted sales in current dollars; by itself, it does not show production volume or sales adjusted for inflation.
The agency said the largest increases were in the petroleum and coal product subsector and the aerospace product and parts industry group. It did not provide separate growth rates or dollar values for either group in this short advance release. The national 0.1% movement therefore records the combined change in total sales, but does not reveal how each other manufacturing industry performed. Provincial results for September were also not included in this early indicator.
The estimate used a weighted response rate of 71.3% for the September reference month. Statistics Canada said the survey’s average final response rate over the preceding 12 months was 92.4%. The rates describe different coverage: the first is the weighted response rate used in the still-incomplete September estimate, while the second is a retrospective average of final responses in earlier months. The difference is a reminder that the evidence base for the advance figure can still expand.
Statistics Canada’s methods paper says manufacturing advance indicators use information from a portion of respondents before collection is complete. They are not forecasts of future activity: they use early observations for the reference month itself. Because they are produced sooner from less complete data, they are less precise than later preliminary and revised estimates. Statistics Canada also says the advance products provide less detail, with results at broader national levels.
The methods paper says the manufacturing advance indicator is typically published 25 days after a month ends, followed by a preliminary estimate at about 45 days and a revised estimate at about 76 days. Those timings are program averages for 2025. In that year, average response rates for manufacturing advance indicators were 67%, compared with 86% for preliminary estimates and 89% for revised estimates. These comparisons show the trade-off between speed and fuller measurement; they do not predict the direction or size of a revision for any particular month.
In the preceding final monthly release, August manufacturing sales rose 1.5% to C$79.9 billion in seasonally adjusted current dollars. That result covers a different month and is not a September reading. The August report also said current-dollar sales can reflect price movements; total sales in constant dollars were unchanged that month. Any comparison between September’s 0.1% advance figure and August’s 1.5% final increase therefore needs to keep both the reference month and the advance-versus-final distinction clear.
Statistics Canada scheduled the official September manufacturing sales estimate for November 13, 2026. It will use a more complete set of survey and administrative data, and the published figure may differ from the advance indicator. For now, the available evidence points to a small overall monthly rise, with petroleum and coal products and aerospace among the largest sources of increase. Until the next release, 0.1% should be read as the agency’s early September estimate, not a settled result or a stand-alone verdict on the sector’s direction.
