Winston-Salem State University (WSSU) received a three-year, $496,376 grant from the U.S. National Science Foundation to develop education on AI security and cyber threats. In its October 15 announcement, the university said the project will create four teaching units for courses in healthcare management, education and computer science.

The units will cover how AI systems can fail or be attacked, how to assess a tool before adopting it, and the legal and ethical duties that apply when an AI system causes harm or a data breach. WSSU will draw case studies from Novant Health, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, local public schools and Cisco. The project lead estimates that about 200 to 250 students per year could benefit directly based on existing course enrollment; that figure is a projection, not a reported outcome.
