WMO’s State of Global Water Resources 2025 report, released on 17 September, says river discharge worldwide in 2025 was among the driest in more than 35 years. It places this finding alongside the long-term decline in land freshwater storage and glacier retreat.

The agency said the past seven years had abnormal river flows, land-surface water storage declined over the past decade, and glaciers in all regions lost mass for a fourth consecutive year. It also noted improved water data coverage but continuing gaps in affected areas.
