# Westinghouse plans roughly $1 billion nuclear-fuel factory in South Carolina

Westinghouse announced on 21 October an approximately $1 billion plan for a new low-enriched uranium plus (LEU+) fuel factory at its Columbia Fuel Fabrication Facility in Hopkins, South Carolina. Construction is underway, and the company expects operations to begin in 2030. It describes the project as the first fleet-scale nuclear-fuel factory to be built in the United States in more than 50 years.

The factory is planned at the existing Columbia site, where Westinghouse says more than 1,200 people are employed. A study commissioned by the company with researchers at the University of South Carolina’s Darla Moore School of Business projects $4.9 billion in positive economic impact across the state over ten years. That is a commissioned study’s projection, not an observed economic outcome.
